Internal Family Systems Level 1 in 2026 — the training track that is not CBT or EMDR

Key Findings
  • IFS Institute (founded by Richard Schwartz) runs Level 1 Professional Training as the formal entry point into the model. Up to 100 hours of supervised experience; six residential or online modules over approximately 9 months.
  • Registration moved to a General Application + Lottery system in 2024 due to oversubscription. North American Level 1 trainings are lottery-allocated. European and UK trainings (IFS UK, IFS Akademie) have their own 2026 calendar with direct registration.
  • Level 1 is prerequisite for Level 2, Level 3, and for full IFS Certification. Completion does NOT equal certification — that requires additional supervised practice, consultation, and case-based review.
  • Tuition ranges roughly $4,500-$6,500 USD (North America), €3,800-€5,200 (EU), £4,200-£5,800 (UK). 85+ CE credits available depending on jurisdiction and provider.

Internal Family Systems Level 1 in 2026 — the training track that is not CBT or EMDR

Why this modality this year

PsyReflect has covered the standard evidence-based tracks heavily: EMDR (Issue #31 EMDRIA), schema therapy (#14, #21, #28 ISST), DBT (#25 DBT-LBC). IFS has been mentioned but not built out. That is a gap. In 2026 IFS sits at the intersection of several clinically important movements:

  • Parts-based trauma work — the model that trauma-focused CBT and EMDR explicitly do not theorise. Complex PTSD and dissociative presentations are where IFS language has become lingua franca.
  • Psychedelic-assisted therapy — most PAT protocols in training use some form of parts work in integration. IFS-trained clinicians are being hired preferentially for psilocybin and MDMA trial sites.
  • Trauma somatic integration — the Janina Fisher / Frank Anderson school trains substantially in IFS language.

What the training actually involves

The Level 1 format is experiential. Trainees practice in triads, do their own parts work, and apply the model with supervision. It is closer to psychodynamic training than to a CBT protocol course — you cannot read your way through. The theoretical core: the psyche is constituted of parts (managers, firefighters, exiles) around a Self characterised by curiosity, compassion, and confidence. Therapy unburdens exiled parts and renegotiates protector roles.

Outcome evidence is still catching up. Two RCTs (Shadick et al. 2013 on rheumatoid arthritis; Haddock et al. 2016 on female sexual desire) plus a growing body of single-case and open trials. It is evidence-informed, not yet first-line guideline.

Options by region (2026)

North America: IFS Institute Level 1 — lottery-based. Check ifs-institute.com for 2026 cycles. Backup: Life Architect (IFS Institute-approved online Level 1).

Europe: IFS Akademie (Germany, English-language cohorts), IFS UK, IFS Ireland — direct registration, 2026 cohorts starting Feb, May, and Sept.

RU/CIS: No IFS Institute-certified training on the ground. IFS Akademie online cohorts accept RU trainees. Russian-language supervision rare; Lisa Ferentz and Frank Anderson workshops (English) are the available entry point.

Budget track: NICABM IFS courses (Richard Schwartz, Frank Anderson) — not certification-qualifying, but solid model exposure at $200-$500. Good first step before committing to Level 1.

For your practice

If you work with complex trauma, dissociation, or are planning to move into psychedelic integration work, IFS Level 1 is the next logical credential. If you are EMDR-certified, IFS complements rather than replaces. If you are CBT-trained, the learning curve is larger — the model asks for a different stance toward the patient's internal conflict.

Pull quote: The training that maps onto the next five years of trauma work — complex PTSD, somatic integration, psychedelic assisted — is IFS. In 2026 the door is open but narrow, and getting narrower.

Notes: Lottery system means planning a year ahead. EU/UK routes more accessible than North America in 2026.
