Free CE on Depression and Anxiety Disorders: The ADAA Professional Library
Free CE on Depression and Anxiety Disorders: The ADAA Professional Library
What It Is
The Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA) maintains a professional education library with free and low-cost CE resources specifically for clinicians treating depression and anxiety. ADAA is an APA-approved CE provider and focuses on evidence-based, clinically practical training rather than theoretical overview.
Free CE Resources Available
Free webinar archive (CE-eligible recordings):
- Depression treatment update webinars — updated annually with current pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy evidence (typically 1–2 CE each)
- "Treating the Whole Patient" series — comorbid depression+anxiety+chronic pain, depression+insomnia, treatment-resistant presentations
- Postpartum depression treatment webinar — includes discussion of newer pharmacological options and integrated care models
- Depression in older adults — late-life depression, medical comorbidity, cognitive overlap
- Measurement-based care for depression — PHQ-9 application, clinical cutoffs, progress monitoring in practice
Self-paced free modules (CE-eligible):
- "Understanding Depression" (2 CE, free) — mechanism, phenomenology, assessment, treatment selection framework
- "The Science of PTSD and MDD Comorbidity" (1 CE, free) — substantial overlap, sequential vs integrated treatment
- "Behavioral Activation for Depression" (1 CE, free) — practical implementation guide, from assessment to activity scheduling to graded exposure
Benchmarking tool: The ADAA also provides free access to PHQ-9 and GAD-7 clinical benchmarks derived from their provider network — allowing clinicians to compare their patient population's scores and treatment responses against an aggregate database. This is genuinely useful for measurement-based care implementation.
Why ADAA Over Generic CE Providers
General CE providers offer depression modules that tend to be diagnostic (DSM criteria review) or pharmacological (medication classes and mechanisms). ADAA's content is clinical: focused on the treatment decisions practitioners actually face — treatment-resistant presentations, comorbidity management, when to refer, how to use measurement instruments to guide decisions.
The behavioral activation module is particularly practical: BA is a first-line evidence-based intervention for MDD with a substantial evidence base (comparable efficacy to full CBT in multiple trials, with lower training requirements), yet is systematically undertaught in clinical training programs. The ADAA module provides a structured implementation approach.
For supervisors: The measurement-based care webinars are useful for supervision training. Helping supervisees implement the PHQ-9 as a clinical tool rather than an intake form is a high-leverage supervision target.
Additional Free Depression Resources
Beck Institute Depression Resource Hub (beckinstitute.org/depression):
- Free videos demonstrating CT-D techniques for specific presentations
- Case conceptualization worksheet templates
- Brief activation hierarchy planning guides
NIMH Depression resources (nimh.nih.gov/health/topics/depression):
- Clinician-facing evidence summaries on treatment options
- Patient-facing handouts in English, Spanish, and 14 other languages (useful for psychoeducation)
CANMAT 2023 Depression Guidelines (open access):
- Canadian Network for Mood and Anxiety Treatments guidelines for MDD
- Freely downloadable PDF — the most practically organized clinical practice guidelines for depression currently available
- Includes algorithms for first-line, second-line, and TRD management with evidence ratings
Resource note: The ADAA professional library is best used as a supplement to clinical practice — the behavioral activation module and measurement-based care webinars are directly applicable. The CANMAT 2023 guidelines are the single most useful free clinical reference for evidence-based depression management; if you have not read them, they should be on your desk (or bookmarked). Free access at canmat.org.
